In case you are in need of some new sound to endure these ridiculous cold temperatures, I highly recommend Spoek Mathambo, one of the best South African artists at the moment. He isn’t so new anymore in the South African and Swedish scene, and is becoming quite well known in the rest of Europe and in the US. He is known to turn parties into real parties and he has brought African electronic music to another level. His 2010 debut album, Mshini Wam (translation: ‘bring me my machine’), got many people hooked on ‘township tech’, as Spoek describes his music.
Spoek Mathambo is impossible to place in a category or in a box. His music is hard to describe, Kwaito rhythms are mixed into rock music, and rock music is fused with some industrial. In any case, he produces an addicting Afro-Futuristic sound. He collaborates with a great number of talented artists, and photographers such as Pieter Hugo, who directed the video ‘Control’, a cover of Joy Divisions, ‘She’s Lost Control’.
His new debut album ‘Father Creeper’ comes out on March 12th, Spoek Mathambo made his new cut ‘Let Them Talk’ available as a free download on his website
